Wide headstage

196.2.56.5

Going from the Cheap opamp headphone output of my CDP to a solid state discrete component dual mono headphone amp , the most noticeable trait is what you describe , the image becomes less central in your head and assumes more of a live presentation , the stage widens.
Going to my Custom build (85 lbs monster) Valve headphone amp , this happens once more in relation to the SS one (albeit not as dramatically) The valve amp is superb with my phones.

BUT I was watching to A Claude Van Damme film last night (some action thing about him and a twin bro) , with my HD600's on a (don't laugh here) cheap Fisher HT reciever (Satellite decoder output (analog) to the Aux in) and it was VERY VERY good , I discovered the reciever as an exceptional headphone amp by chance after looking for something like a pre or integrated with a good headphone output
Evidently it pads down the actual power output instead of using a op amp or the like.
The Film was in stereo and no processing was applied and I must tell you , at times I thought I had forgotten to switch the speakers off.
The sound was VERY realistic and not at all "in your head" with some amazing explosions and the like.
Why this was so for this particular movie , I cant say

PS your review is probably the MOST comprehensive I have EVER seen , it must have taken a while to write etc. Very well done.
