I tried a passive on mine and it sounded constricted. Somewhere in the Pass literature on the website or in one of the manuals they specifically recommend NOT to use a passive preamp. Too bad I didn't read that before I got the preamp.

I like the sound of mine using a Music Reference RM2. Someone on here said that the RM2 sounds better than later models due to less negative feedback. Not sure about that. Probably any good modern tube preamp would work well. I suspect the Eastern Electric Minimax would be good. Probably the Cary made AES preamps. Cary's, of course. You probably should be careful with the noise level from the preamp.

You will probably be using fairly high efficiency speakers so you MAY hear some tube hiss with some tube preamps. I believe preamps that use 6922 tubes are quieter than those with some other tubes like 12ax7s. I once had a Luxman CL 35 which is a nice preamp. Problem was it added too much hiss to my system and I dumped it for a solid state preamp which didn't sound as nice, but was quieter.

Some day I'll probably get a Pass preamp. If it is anywhere near the quality of the Aleph 30, it should be one fine sounding unit.
