How would news orgs know? They have so few people on the ground. This war from day one has been the least accurately reported in my lifetime. Things are better but the reporting we get still stinks. We don't know the real story. One of the biggest reasons for the surge's decrease in violence are the huge payments to warlords and the like that are part of the surge strategy. Neither the Iraqi front nor the Afghani front are going well. Maybe that's why they aren't in the news so much. Just because Iraq may be going better doesn't mean things are "good" there. With gas prices, the economy, flooding and the election the new shifts in cycles as always. I've heard several reports on different outlets in the last 24 hours regarding the pentagon report on the surge.
