Seriously, though, I think we are generally on the same page on this issue intellectually. That is, the malfeasance was not limited to the lenders, but usually also included the borrowers. And that will be hard to police regardless of regulations whenever the market heats up like it did over the past decade or so.
And yet I sense that I believe in the need for social saftey nets more than a true NSTAFALer.
Sometimes we (the tax payers) just have to help folks out of a bind even if they did dig their own holes and even if helping them leads them to believe, erroneously, that the lunch they're getting is free.
The issue is where to draw the line so that society is both humane and yet encourages resposibility. Not an easy answer.
