In Malayalam, one of the 16 languages of India, there are similar words of address.People call each other A-doe if of equal age and social status, A-da when addressing younger men,A-dee to younger women.
However men of the older generation call their wives A-dee while the wives call the husbands 'children's father', never the name!!But then in that culture the women serve the food to the husband and eat only what is left after he finishes.
They also use the word 'you' very carefully.Directly addressing younger people, the word 'Nee' is used while for equals the word is 'Ningal'.Addressing people of authority or older or higher social status, it is 'Thangal'.
