I gave this a lot of thought, and initially wrote a lengthy post,

but then scrapped it. Maintaining personal privacy is one thing, but in my opinion trying to inspire someone else to avoid a major mistake is a better thing. The purpose of this post is to accomplish the latter.

A couple years ago Bob Crump experienced the first stroke that he was aware of, and a year ago this month he passed away. That, combined with the fact that other people I knew seemed to be dropping like flies inspired me to finally quit smoking and adopt a really healthy diet. Just when I thought I was well on my way to good health and avoiding any problems, I was informed that I have a two to three centimeter "mass" in my right lung. No one has called it cancer yet, but they have all but held up bright neon signs with that word on it. It is as if they think if they say that word I might go off on the deep end Perhaps many people do.

I'll be honest, my first reaction was right in there with crawling into a sleeping bag and discovering there is a rattlesnake in it with you. Then there was bewilderment, followed by a sense of anger.

Fortunately for me this can be operated on and removed completely, and then sort of forgotten. But it brought on even more major lifestyle changes that will ensure it will never really be forgotten. I was fortunate that a little event in my life forced me to pay attention to seemingly minor pains in my chest, and that event led to the timely discovery of my problem.

After I realized I could have wandered around for several more years without this being detected, I found that precious relationships were even more precious. Nature became more beautiful. Furry creatures became more furry. Hell, music even sounded better.

If you smoke and think you are getting away with something, think again. If you have recurring pains in your chest or in your head, pay attention to them and have a doctor check it out. If you have been eating excessive portions of the wrong kinds of food, you had better think again.

Put simply: Attention all of you balding or salt and pepper hair type guys! Be advised we aren't 17 any more. All of the shit we were warned might happen can and will eventually happen unless you take the right precautions.

I had ceased doing these things and they still caught up with me. Six to eight months of living right is not enough to undo thirty years of bad habits. You've been warned.

Now that I have that out of my system, I'm back to my regularly scheduled programming and busying myself being larger than a two to three centimeter mass in my lung.

How's that, soxie?
