Saw Chicago last night

The band, not the Broadway musical. They came to the San Jose City National Civic, a smaller, 2,800-seat venue. I'm used to seeing them, when they play stadia.

For my 10-year-old son, this was his first non-kids concert. We were seated to the left (as you're facing the stage), 12 rows deep. Chicago now have a new bassist, Jeff Coffey. He replaces Jason Scheff, who had been with the band, since Peter Cetera left in 1985. In addition to Coffey, Chicago have 8 others: 2 keyboard players, 1 drummer, 1 percussionist, a guitarist, and 3 horns (usually trumpet, trombone, and sax).

Now, we (my friends and I) usually go to heavy metal or dance concerts. Chicago are different, because of their 3 horn players. Not only do the horns add flavor to songs like "Old Days" and "Saturday In The Park," they add to the jams. Perhaps because of the smaller venue, the Diane Warren-penned "Look Away" was much more effective, than we we've seen Chicago at stadia. Prog rock drummer Tris Imboden really gives you a different take on the songs, versus the studio recordings. He plays with a bite and pop, which cut through the mix. We typically don't experience this type of playing, outside of the more sophisticated heavy metal bands.

Most of the members are in their 60s and 70s. Yet, they are in fine form. If you don't catch them on this tour, don't worry; Chicago will be doing the summer stadia thing with the Doobie Brothers.
