My feeling has always been that it should be an 8 team playoff. You would then have the Champs of the Power 5 and 3 wildcards. Of course, there would still be some bitching on those #7 and #8 teams.

As you mentioned, the SEC is also notorius for playing cupcakes out of conference. Alabama played W. Kentucky which was good in their weak conference at 10-3, but also lost to Vanderbilt, Kent St (3-9) and Chattanooga, a FCS team that shouldn't count as a game. To their credit, the SEC has more recently been playing one real competitor out of conference and I sure wish that SC had played 'Bama in October.

Penn St and Washington for the Rose Bowl would be a great match up. If you had 8 teams in the playoff, you could honor those old traditions rather than having the Peach and Fiesta Bowls on New Years Eve. I don't see Washington having much of a chance with 'Bama. Ohio St or Michigan probably would have the best chance against them, but I doubt they can hang for a full 4 quarters with them.

Personally, I'd bounce Clemson out and put Penn St in their place for the Top 4, but that won't happen.

And if only SC would have started Darnold at the beginning of the season....there's always next year.
