...I was in my office in downtown Oakland in the area that used to be called "Pill Hill" on Telegraph at 30th.

My company was in the process of being acquired and my new boss was visiting - he had left about an hour earlier and driven down the 880 freeway (which collapsed) to get to the airport and fly home to Florida.

One of my employees brought in our new disaster plan as the building started shaking.

We looked out the window and people were streaming into the street from the bar across the street.

I headed home and met my wife who had just arrived with our daughter.

We turned on the TV to see a replay of the World Series game interrupted, the section of the Bay Bridge had collapsed, the 880 freeway pancaked, the fire in the Marina (shown over and over so that you thought San Francisco had burned down) and all of the other damage done.
