On October 17, 1989, I was a freshman a UC Santa Cruz's Crown College. The dining halls opened at 5:00p. We wanted to grab a quick dinner, and then gather in lounges, to watch Game 3 of the Bay Bridge Series. Never made it. As soon as I got my tray of food, the Loma Prieta quake struck. It was strong enough, that I could not stand. I had to put my tray on the ground. Luckily I was far enough from the milk dispenser, which fell to the floor.

Many of us walked to the Great Meadow, where helicopters from SoCal landed. After inspections, one building at a time was declared safe for re-entry. I didn't get into my dorm, until after midnight. While I had no luck contacting my Bay Area relatives, I was able to call my grandmother in Honolulu. I told her that I was safe, and to try to get a hold of my family.

After the quake, one of the first local albums to come out was Joe Satriani's Flying In A Blue Dream. Hard to believe that was a whopping 27 years ago.
