"Because no one wants to pit a small car against a big fat SUV in a collision...". As long as laws allow all kinds of vehicles on our main roads, a huge mass disparity is going to exist. I for one would much rather be in a small car and tangle with an SUV than be in an SUV and tangle with an 18 wheeler with 40 tons of steel behind it.
The real solution to the SUV "problem" is much higher fuel taxes...which is also unfortunately a politician's death wish. Long live the status quo!
