Always "communicating" - just not with the person standing or sitting next to us.
I rarely visit large cities anymore but when I do I wish to initiate casual conversations with people on the streets, whenever possible. It used to be considered a cool thing to do, asking a stranger for directions so as to engage in a bit of light conversation, etc...
Bother someone for directions nowadays and the street person is likely to sneer and look at you as if you're crazy to be talking to them at all. Barely looking up from the little phone/tablet thingie in their hand, they'll say or imply "Get yourself a smartphone, dude."
