Try enjoying that experience while on a motorcycle. I've been riding for 42 years, and because of texting it's more dangerous than ever.

I'm not usually one for "more laws", but I agree with John the Scot on this one. Not only should this be illegal, but the penalty should be severe enough (say five years in jail and an insane fine) that next to nobody would risk texting while driving.

I had an accident a few years ago (luckily I was in my car) with an 18 year old kid who was texting. I was waiting to make a left on a country road in broad daylight, and looked in my mirror (a lifelong habit from riding motorcycles) to see this black BMW (car) bearing down on me FAST.

He wasn't even attempting to stop, so I floored the gas and went straight. I felt my car get bumped a little, but heard this tremendous crash behind me.

I had been waiting to make my left until an oncoming Chevy Suburban ( A full sized SUV) coming in the opposite direction had cleared the intersection. Turns out the kid swung hard left (to avoid me) and drove head-on into the Suburban, each doing 45 MPH. I had a dented bumper, but the wife of the guy in the Suburban was taken away by ambulance, strapped to a board.

The kid had a whole field he could have swung into, had he swerved right, but at the last nanosecond he saw me, and swerved left. The first thing the kid did was ask to borrow my phone, (he saw me calling 911) because he couldn't find his. I guess that's what happens when you have it in your hand during a head-on collision.

I'm just grateful that I wasn't on my bike that afternoon, because he still managed to tag the back of my car pretty hard. I still think about that guy's wife, and wonder if her back ever recovered.
