Atually it is the long list of unique 'safety' requirements in the USA which (naturally) they will not allow EU regs, even if tougher) nooo.. they have to do it USA way, or no import.

The sad thing is if one did import a illegal car, the customs dudes will confiscate it.

What would make more sense is tax the Hell out of it instead.
Yeah you can have a non-USA car.. But pay a $25,000/$50,000 import fee.
Get caught trying to evade fee, go to jail for tax evasion.

Then rich folks get their toys, and Uncle Sam gets a boodle of cash.
