Read most of Larry Niven's large SciFi output. Most of it is very readable and might even be adaptable into a movie.
Currently reading 'Hamilton' the bio written by Ron Chernow. Very in-depth look at the man shot and killed by Aaron Burr in July of 1804.
Any 'student' of American History should have this book 'on the short list'.
