bullethead, I can relate to that.
one of my wife's best friends moved back to Jersey to a place about 5 blocks from the water. She moved back there and got in her new place ONE WEEK before Sandy hit. She lost everything. :-(
The devastation in WV is not being reported as widely as a hurricane would be, but is just as bad. My mother said that they got about 12" rain in fewer than 24 hours. All that rain that falls on the mountains rushes down into the narrow valley and the small stream becomes a raging torrent. Also, she said, that the winds were extremely strong!
Having lived on the gulf coast and now on the east coast in "Hampton roads", Virginia I have had the unpleasant experience of being in a few hurricanes so I can certainly relate to your dealing with hurricanes.
One of the problems in dealing with the floods up there in the hills is that the area is sparsely populated and one can only access the nearest town via narrow winding country roads. Many of those roads were washed out. That makes it almost impossible for rescue workers and other officials to account for everyone and anyone stranded may be in a remote area and nobody may know where they are.
Anyway, the whole thing is so sad. Especially the loss of life, particularly those who lost children to the floods. There's just not any words....................
