If backing up slowly does not work, the next best defense is to drop, curl up into a ball. And hope for the best. Wearing a backpack can provide some protection from the mauling as you curl up and pray for deliverance...

A guy from around here invented a backpack pepper-spray system that allows the user to activate the spray while curled up or facing away from an attackl. THAT sounds like a pretty good idea to me.
