...not very far.SF to LA is a boring 500mi 6+ hour drive straight down Hiway 5 - the most interesting sight is a CHP car hiding by an underpass looking for speeders.
In the winter there can be snow on the Grapevine - a high steep grade before the LA area travelled by lots of big rigs who tend to spin out and block the road for hours.
Many people prefer to drive but I always fly.
Round trip ticket is about $150 for the 1hr flight.
I am TSA Pre and I don't mind sitting in the airport reading.
30 minutes to the Oakland airport, park, check-in, TSA screen + wait 90 minutes, 1hr flight, 30 minutes to get luggage if I check it, another 30 minutes to rent a car - max. 4 hrs - I've saved 2 hrs and I'm relaxed when I arrive.
