I used to BUILD what we called 'color organs' many years ago.
A simple circuit using an impedance matching transfomer and an SCR was all it took per channel.
I was less-good when it can to making a 2 or 3 channel version since I didn't understand crossovers very well, if at all!

I used a couple strings of the Familiy Christmas Lights one year which sure didn't win me any popularity contests around the house!
