f you start to crave a dose, then stop immediately. As a night shift medic in an ER and an ICU, we used to find stray tablets after a shift (the pharmacy pre-packaged pills, about a half dozen per vial), take them home and use to help us sleep. A heavy night of incoming would leave us too exhausted and wound up to sleep.
I noticed after awhile that I really looked forward to dosing myself. Finding the discipline to stay away from the stuff took some doing, so I became an alcoholic instead.
Just kidding about that. I was an alky long before.
