It became pointless when MagLev arrived.
On the test track in Germany they regularly hit 260mph and the current record set in Japan is 375mph.
Admittedly that is only a few mph more than the french TGV achieved but then the wheel-driven TGV required 150km (93 miles) of downhill track to reach top speed AND slow down safely while the MagLev did it on just over 10 miles of track.
Another advantage of maglev is that it has no moving parts at all and it doesn't need to carry fuel.
