Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theatre

In the mid- and late-80s, I had to take several San Francisco Muni lines, in order to get to high school. During my morning trip, the 38-Geary passed the Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theatre. During that time period, it was just like any other strip club. It was hard for us high school students to imagine that, in the 70s, this place was kind of famous.

Located in the seedy Tenderloin, the O'Farrell Theatre, perhaps on account of the guards, was arguably less dangerous than the surrounding area. I had a good friend who lived on Hyde near Turk. We'd always walk briskly through those streets, careful to avoid filth and people who looked like they could accost us. We'd make a mad dash for the Main Library, the Warfield, and the Civic Center Station. We did not know until after the fact, that Hyde Street Studios (245 Hyde), a nondescript from the outside building, was where rock acts did some recording. My friend scratched his head, and said, "I could have sworn I once saw Joe Satriani strolling around..."

On that 38-Geary bus ride, I usually was listening to music via Walkman. So yes, certain music from the mid-to-late 80s fit the mood, as I passed the O'Farrell Theatre.

I think I was a sophomore, when, one Saturday after going to the Main Library, four of my soft, 4.0 GPA friends walked by the O'Farrell Theatre. We slowed as we approached, and you could feel us get nervous. Funny how the sheltered girl, CT, was the most curious. She wanted to see if they'd "let us in."

Andy looked at her as if she were crazy. He protested, "We don't look anything close to 18. Even if we bribed them, they wouldn't let us in."

The other girl wondered, "If we tried to get in, would they arrest us?"

Andy shook his head, "Nah, they'd just point to the sign [no admittance under 18], and kick us out."

We chickened out, made it to Japantown, where we had an early evening dinner.
