The Cicada is quite a noise maker. Here in WV they reappear from the ground in mid to late July. They make a different sound at night and start after sunset. You can actually listen to their sound and closely predict the temperature! The warmer the evening the faster the sound is and the quicker it repeats. As fall arrives and it cools the last few are still around in early October and the sound is much slower, repeats less frequently as well. The last week we've had a few cool nights into the low 50's and they slow down a lot. They finally stop at around 3AM-4AM each night and then get going again when the sun warms things up at around 10-11 depending on the temp and amount of sun.
The Wiki page says they can produce up to 120dB. On a warm night here at their peak in early August they can easily produce SPL well into the 80's as measured by my meter. I can't accurately guess how many I am hearing on any given night from my deck at one time but I'd guess between 25-100.
There is only one per tree here it seems. I have several hundred trees within 100 years of my house and you can sit on the deck and locate them in trees in all directions.
