Most motor racing is not profitable.
That's why in the top categories it is mainly works teams which are run for marketing purposes.

Take VW for example: They race VWs in the WRC, Audis (diesel) and Porsches (petrol) in Endurance,
SEATs in WTCC and Audis in the DTM (nominally RS5s but it is a silhouette series, underneath they have nothing in common with road cars).
Pretty much all run at a financial loss if you don't count the advertising potential.
