Surprise.
Most of the Zeros were in China, SE Asia and the Pacific.
The Zero had not been in production long. There may have been some Claudes, and some Oscars in Japan.
I'd be willing to bet that Japan didn't have any early warning radar yet. They were always behind on that front right through to the end.
IF there had been any Zeros up there would have been higher casualties among the Mitchells.
