it would have been splashdown. I remember reading that the strong head winds and modifications to the B25 made liftoff much shorter than expected. Only one plane dipped below the ship's horizon and climbed back into view.
An amazing feat. Esp considering this mission was done 100% in enemy territory. And the Zeros had nearly complete command of the skies, at the time.
