I went fishing with a guy who bought one of those back in the late 80s. It took me all of 5 seconds to realize the car was a fraud masquerading as a worthy contender (and trust me- I was really trying to find something to like about it).It became apparent what Detroit was trying to do; which was play catch up with Mercedes and BMWs which were selling like HOTCAKES. But to merely slap a couple of Cadillac emblems on a Chevy Cavalier was well, a slap in the face of the American consumer and, IMO represent the laziness and lackluster design engineering in American automobile manufacturing. Yeah sure, that tactic was nothing new in Detroit, we all know they've been doing that for decades (and quite successfully as a matter of fact); but this....THIS would prove to be the final straw, an eye opener, the proverbial curtain drawn/man exposed behind the curtain...
Auto reviewers were merciless; sales were dismal. Hell I'm not sure if they EVER recovered from that fiasco.
