A NY Times article today: Fountain Valley, CA, near Long Beach/Hungtington Beach.
Sparkling clear water from a spigot in this town was sewage effluent just 45 minutes prior, coming from the Orange County sewage treatment plant next door. At a specialized (for sure) plant, the effluent goes through several steps of purification, such that, as the plant's manager states, "It's stripped down to the H, 2, and the O." The remaining water is cleaner than anything that normally flows out of a home faucet or comes in a brand-name bottle, including anything that usually gives tap water a flavor, such as mineral content. Stuff we usually like.
However, what we have here is a marketing challenge. The old salutation, 'eat shit and die' has no similar context regarding drinking it, but the public doesn't swallow it. It's a hard sell.
As the drought tightens in California, they have had to give a second look at water production means that were passed over for being too controversial, expensive, or unpleasant, turning to abundant sources like the Pacific Ocean for desal, and recycling methods as described. These methods were already in play for outlets like irrigation, zoos, and golf courses, but now need to be tweeked for human consumption. The tech is already there, but the emotional buy-in will take time.
