A couple of things about this

First and foremost, there is no point in us burning up too many brain cells analyzing this until we see what other moves Rizzo has up his sleeve, if any. Just for the sake of argument, let's assume that the lineup they have today is the one on opening day (and I seriously doubt that). I look at it like a bit of a two-fer. The chances of re-signing Zimmermann don't look all that good. Scherzer is getting a lot of money, but the contract is heavily back-loaded, which is unusual in cases like this (he'll only get about half the money over the course of the contract). This makes it affordable to keep Zimmermann this year and go for it with a pretty amazing rotation. It's going to take the same money to sign Zimmermann, and there is no guarantee that he would stay, even for that amount. If they wait until next year, and cannot sign Zim, there is no guarantee that a replacement for him will be there to be had. Flexibility is the key, and now they have it in spades. As I said, there are so many ways that this could play out, it is mind-boggling. Sure, nothing's guaranteed, but I don't see much downside here. and I can't wait for the season to start.

I'm with you about the offense, and I'm sure something is coming. The whole Desmond/Escobar thing is a head scratcher to me. I don't see Desmond being traded unless someone comes in with a stupid offer that they can't turn down, and I think that they have a somewhat better chance of re-signing him than Zimmermann. The only thing to replace him with right now that would make sense would be a left-handed hitting second baseman with power, but I don't know of any young Joe Morgans sitting out there on the market right now. The most likely scenario is that if Desmond goes, they have a shortstop to bridge the gap until a couple of prospects are ready for the bigs.

Of course, I am a reliable expert source for this kind of analysis, due to all of the in-depth info I got during the 30 second meeting that my son and I had with Mike Rizzo at NatsFest a few weeks ago!
