I'm experimenting with manual focus. My camera will provide a magnified image of part of the frame which has enough 'snap' for good focus. My camera also has an OLED viewfinder in addition to the rear screen. The viewfinder is adjusted to MY eye (diopter adjust) so I can get as good a result as the mediocre lens allows. I use the viewfinder for this kind of work. After critical focus, I recompose and 'snap'. Any minor subject movement should be taken care of with DOF at smaller apertures.
Just my opinion, but depending on all the AutoFocus stuff is a potential mistake. At the zoo, for example, you have lots of opportunities for intervening objects and reflections. And since even a circular Polarizer won't knock down the reflections (not to mention 1stop+ of loss) manual focus becomes IT.
Too much is never enough
