I went camping

I just couldn't pass the opp with this Indian summer weather here. 70's, even 80 one day. I took one of the dogs, some hickory for a table to work on and ham radio gear. Music? Of course! I talked to several continents with just 100 watts. My longest contact was Japan, about 7K miles. Lots of other cool ones including a few to Europe via FM on 10 meters.

My wife and I seldom camp since moving here. We do take two of our weeks annually to tent camp to vacation on the cheap but that's it. Where I live is more remote and less populated than most any campsites. Don't get me wrong I've been where I saw nobody for days but that isn't the norm for drive up camping. Hike in is different. But you can't take a 75 pound slab of Hickory, the dog and all the radio gear. Food choices become limited backpacking as well. Both "modes" are great.

I was in the GW National Forrest free campground and it is near a paved road so there was some traffic noise, way more than my dirt road at home. The worst thing was a fire that burned near the closest town, Woodstock,Va. I spoke to a person that saw it who said it was a controlled industrial first set to burn trash.

From probably 7 to 11PM the smoke and visible ash came right a long the ridge line to where I was camping. It smelled horrible and quite toxic. It smelled most like overheated brake linings burning.

So I go camping and get shitty air and more noise than home. Oh well. Other than that it was good.
