Michael Pollan.
Just as intriguing as the moto book I earlier recommended.
The writer is a well-known author who decided to build himself a small Thoreau-like cabin near the back of his New England property. He had no prior carpentry skills, but hired an architect to draw the plans and then a carpenter to show him what to do and how to do it.
This is a primer for all those who are considering such a project: the relationship between the architect and the carpenter is highly amusing; the amount of knowledge you'll garner from just the work installing the windows is worth the price.
Of course, like Thoreau, Pollan is after more than the exercise of building: he waxes philosophical throughout his intriguing and exhausting project.
Along with "Shop Class as Soulcraft," I can't think of a better modern tandem of books for guys who like to do stuff.
