structure in NYC is one of perspective: Manhattan is so chuck full of high rises that our puny little 5-6 foot heights don't allow us to "fathom" the absolute height of these towers. You see it from 1-mile away and walk towards it, your neck increasingly having to tilt back as you approach. But, if not for the fact it's higher than its neighbors, you'd not think it really is 1500' tall.
BTW, the best NY views aren't from the ESB, but rather the Roc Center; lines are far shorter, too.
