They are under-appreciated, but I wouldn't say the "most" under-appreciated. :)
Anyway, along that line... When I started college as a music major, my intention was to be a high school band director. Holy moly, am I glad I veered off into sound and acoustics! My son's band director is at school by 7 - 7:30 am, and often doesn't leave until 7 in the evening during marching band season! And tomorrow (yes, Saturday) they have a drumline competition (in Plano, Road Warrior). And then there's the clarinet or oboe player who can't get their reed just right, the trumpet player who thinks the way to warm up is to start on a high C, the flutes who can't agree on intonation, the percussionists who are always goofing off, etc., etc.
Watching these band directors, I'm tellin' ya what, I couldn't do their job!
One band director I know has a t-shirt that says: "Those who can, do. Those who can do more, teach." Amen!
