And it's not just what he's doing outside of Russia's borders either. A friend of ours from Russia, who has lived in the US for about 15 years or so as a Lawful Permanent Resident (i.e., "green card" holder), only just decided to become a U.S. citizen this year. She went to visit her family recently and learned that Putin has plans to reinstate exit visa requirements, like back in the good old Soviet Union, and was generally appalled by the state of affairs. And she's been visiting pretty much every year since coming here. Her husband tells me that when they left, she and her daughters were treated like criminals by the border patrol, while he was basically ignored, which I guess finally put the scare in her enough to switch teams once and for all.
I can't figure Russia out and I've been studying it for about 30 years now. Some of the most talented minds in science, music, literature and the arts generally have come from Russia, and yet it has almost always been a dark and scary place in so many ways.
