that your Canon has several exposure modes that'll help 'trick' it into an exposure setting that'll balance the background light with the (dark) foreground. Most of the point and shoot have 'landscape' 'backlight', and 'portrait' modes that enable some semblance of exposure "control". Check the manual :-) (yes, I realize that RTFM - reading the effing manual - goes against the ethos that some of us XY-chromosomed types hold dear...)

If you don't have the paper (or CD?) manual, I would bet money it's easily located and downloaded from somewhere in cyberspace :-)
