oh, oh... I know the problem! :-)

I can hear my son's voice ringing in my ears...

"yeah, that's cause you're using Auto... man up and use a manual mode"

:-)

Sad but true.

Here's how I do it (with a Nikon DSLR). I take an auto photo and note on the readout the shutter speed and f-stop. Then, I switch to a manual mode (on the Nikon DSLR, either "M" or "A") and set it to roughly those parameters, then start stopping DOWN (typically) a stop or two at a time -- either shutter or f-stop, depending on circumstances.

I am not exactly skilled yet (my son also says, in so many words "light meters are for wimps") but I can usually manage to take an OK photo of sunrise or (more typically) sunset -- sunrise in the summer time in NH is pretty darned early (and not typically as pretty, at my house, as sunset).

evening sunset 70-ish mm at 1/250 sec, f4.5, ISO 220

DSC_9741

night-time stars (and the glow from Claremont, NH to the south) on a clear summer night 10 mm at 30 sec, f4.0 ISO 3200

Digital ain't film ;-) but... the best thing about digital is... take a picture; look at it... if you like it, keep it. If not, just delete it -- costs you nothin' :-)

all the best,
mrh
