While using strong encryption (OpenPGP, for instance) is the only way to maintain any real email privacy, Google is perhaps one of the worst in terms of reserving the "right" to read, archive, and use any part of your email correspondence they might wish to at any given moment, for any given reason. This not only violates your privacy, but that of your personal correspondents as well. Most people don't even think about this sort of thing. Until it bites them in the ass, and then it's a bit too late.
It's so easy and cheap to get your own domain (with email service as well), I don't know why anyone would use these "free" (not really, considering the above) email services. Learning about and using encryption is a good idea as well.
