company that had it's main building right on the banks of the Conococheague creek. I was walking past one day and I noticed a pipe sticking out of the side of the building, directly over the stream. There was a clear liquid (at first I thought it was water) coming out of the pipe at a pretty high rate. As soon as the liquid hit the water below, it turned milky white for a moment (the stream runs pretty fast right along there) then washed on, becoming clear once again.
I climbed over the side of the bridge there, and checked it out. Carbon Tetrachloride has a pretty distinctive odor. I called the environment guys and the business was closed that day! I felt a tiny bit of remorse for the people whose jobs were lost, but REALLY???!!! Carbon Tetrachloride into a major waterway? The "Cheague" feeds directly into the Potomac.
Sheesh!
