Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

Ya'll are REAL people. Like it or not.

Thanks for your thoughts, Mike. You ought to be a writer. Or something. And KP too. Your post below confirms something I've always suspected--the Class Clown is usually the smartest kid in the room. Likewise Chris "9 Inch" Redmond. And Bosh, and dennzio, and SETdude (how's Sis's pregnancy coming, by the way?) and psgary and Mrs. Piggy and...well, the folks who hang out in this room. Yes, there are some serious jerks who hang around AA (not seen any yet in this forum...), and the one thing that stands out about them is that they seem to have NO SENSE OF HUMOR! This is, by the way, the reason that Romy is looked upon with some grudging affection (well, sometimes). As obnoxious as he can be at times, there is a glint of naughty humor in the man.

This is the first (and so far only) cyber-community I've belonged to. I don't go to other discussion forums (though dankgesang may get me soon...), I don't do "chat" rooms. And this is all pretty new to me. The anonymity of this place is fascinating. We learn about each other only what is shared with us. I know some personal details about some of the folks here, but again, only what they've chosen to tell me. And you know about me only what I've shared. Some people here know what kind of music I listen to, what kind of audio gear I own. Some folks here know I prefer vinyl to the devil discs. But only a few of you know my name. And does anybody here know what I do for a living? Isn't that a bit odd? I mean, isn't that one of the first things people usually ask each other when they meet? And here's what's really odd about it: as much as I've interacted with many of you, NO ONE has ever asked! What's more, though many of you have mentioned your jobs in your posts, many have not--and I've never asked anyone here what kind of work they do. Or how old they are. Or how much money they have. Or what they look like. Or who they vote for. Or how big their...ah...feet are.

This is not for lack of curiosity, I think, but out of respect for some unwritten rule of this kind of anonymous place. Our lack of disclosure about ourselves in not (for the most part anyway) based on shame or secrecy, but some sense that in this place, unlike the real world, we can control not only what we disclose, but actually WHO WE ARE. But it's not true. Isn't it intriguing what face some of us put on our cyber-selves. In a very real sense, I believe I have come to know some people here better than I would have gotten to know them if we had met in the "real" world. In fact it is BECAUSE I don't know so many of the real-world things about the people here that I can form an opinion of their character without preconceptions or prejudice. What we learn about each other here is often much more important than those real world things. I know some of you to be gentle, kind, humorous, thoughtful, bright. And I know some people here to be, well, just the opposite of those things. And I feel pretty confident about those opinions--at least, more confident than I am with many of my real-world acquaintances. And, to those of you who've been going back and forth with me for a while, my guess is that you know more about me than I ever really intended to tell you.

Anyway, thanks again Mike. I really love this place. I guess what I've been trying to say is that for me, this artificial community is very, very real. And the people in it are very, very real. And a lot of fun.

(By the way, on the chance that anybody IS wondering, I make my living as a docto..no, I mean astronau...No! I'm a SENATOR! Yeah, that's the ticket! Senator!. I'm really quit wealthy and good looking. My IQ is 182. I'm 25 years old. And Britny really is my wife.)
