weren't we? Anyway, there was a time when a good movie wasn't followed by three or four or seven sequels. They were content to make a profit equal to the gross national product of a small nation once and let it go at that. "Gone With the Wind Again"? I don't think so. Yes, there were a few movies that had sequels. "Sitting Pretty" was followed by several Mr. Belvedere movies. But that was hardly in the class of "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" or "Citizen Kane" and at least one of the subsequent Belvedere was good, but not as good as the original.
Some will argue that the Godfather movies were equally good. Never having been a fan of the original, it is hard for me to judge that. Given the Godfather Trilogy as an exception, can you think of any movie that had a sequel that was just as good as the original? Be honest and ruthless. Don't let your fondness for the original cloud your judgment. I am extremely skeptical that you can name one, but I'm willing to be wrong.
