ate at a few good spots this past week around DC.. figgered I should report out, in case you're visiting soon -
O'Leary's in Annapolis http://www.olearysseafood.com/ good seafood, kinda pricey, but it's a higher end place. nice art and other decor. Pretty good wine list. We closed the place down around 10pm since we were still on left coast time and they weren't. Had an excellent Hawaiian Snapper, not to be confused with your ordinary red snapper, good calamari, very good crab cakes.
Kentmorr, across the bridge from Annapolis, and a few miles south. http://www.kentmorr.com/
On Chesapeake Bay. boat place, famous locally for crab. Had a pile of blue crabs, $42/doz. Like the Calif turkeys we are, I ordered chardonay for the wifey, to the amusement of the local beer drinkers. Excellent. go there. sit on picnic tables by the water, smack em with your mallet and dig in.
on to DC..
Jaleo.. http://www.jaleo.com/ tapas. Nice food, has an in-house wine shop where you can find a good selection of spanish wine at prices $15 off the menu price. Interesting tapas. We had some pork cheeks in sweet sauce, croquetas, and a couple others. Long imaginative list of tapas. dont bother with the patatas bravas. it's thick potato chips with goo on it. Nice decor. Nearby is a very good Italian joint too. bibas? or something like that. I'd go back tho.
Al Tiramisu - near DuPont Circle. http://www.altiramisu.com/ Little hole in the wall place on P street, which is thick with places to eat. This looked like a cozy spot, so we ducked in for a bite. The $140 bill was a surprise, but the food was good. $20+ for a plate of fettucini plain for the kid. $29 for my porcini risoto, which was excellent and a lot of it. Killer wine list, with a lot of high priced stuff we avoided for a couple glasses of $10 chianti classico and dolcetto. Didn't stick around for the desert. Had a lot of celeb photos on the wall, to show its popularity. Bill Cosby, Magic Johnson, Hillary Clinton, the Rock... et al. We aren't any of them.
last: NamViet, in Cleveland Park, near the zoo. http://www.namviet1.com/ another little hole in wall. closes at 10. We closed it after seeing the Indy Jones movie at the Uptown across the street. Food was GREAT. This place also had photos on the wall. Mostly a bunch of navy brass, but also B. Clinton. Had a mussel and shrimp curry dish (excellent), some shrimp spring rolls (huge, meal in itself), lemon grass chicken - different from what I get here at my local place, but v. good. Washed it down with a couple bottles of 33. cheap and good. best bargain find. Zaggat rated.
there you go.
