Two weeks is real tough. The wife and I were there for about 3 weeks on a combination business trip and vacation that took us to Sidney and Melbourne and from there we went down to Tazmania and spent a wonderful week with John C - Aussie and his lovely wife. Other than taking the obligory harbor cruise in Sydney, we didn't do any of the tourist stuff as we had the advantage of having locals point us in the right directions.
There are some great restaurants along the harbor with fantastic views in Sydney and you'll find plenty of pubs which are worth a periodic pit stop. But other than the highlight of seeing Mick Thomas in a small pub-like venue one evenng, Sydney just reminded me of any big city, I actually enjoyed the time in Melborne more as it's smaller and seemed older and more quaint. But that could have been that we got better advice for a hotel near the river and not far from Chinatown.
Take Timbo up on his offer. Our time in Tazmania was terrific with a personal guide and just hanging with the locals. We're done the sites thing during other travels and tend to enjoy just doing nothing so to speak and taking in the local color more.
Your problem is that you'll need to pick rwo or three things and places because 2 weeks isn't much time. To fly in to Sydney and take in the rock and the reef is like starting in Boston and going to the Grand Canyon and San Francisco. I suppose you could do it, but you'll spend half your time traveling.
What time of year are you going? It's getting mighty cold in the south this time of year.
