Was that they were considered merely cheap ways to get high by the peasantry. In the same way grappa is now sold for outrageous amounts of money in funky bottles, it was also originally just "that stuff the riffraff drink".
Not to say that you fine gents are peasants or riffraff, but to our forefathers I was under the impression they considered it the equivalent of crack (vs. cocaine).
I should do more research on this, but I am recalling a book I read some years ago on the subject of "legal intoxicants" and how they came to be in our culture.
