small ones were very popular on narrow guage railways - for both mtn timber and minerals.
BIG ones were in heavy use hauling long trains of coal and ore all over Aussie!
It's a British design!
I think that one man who had a lot to do with Aussies railway development was much in favour of them, or assisted their adoption in UK, here and elsewhere.
Saved on the costs of the ways themselves, IIRC.
