and probably reflect their individual circumstances, but I have to say that I, living in a reasonably leafy city suburb, would never be able to bring myself to own an "indoors only" cat, and - from general observation - my instinct seems to be widely shared in my neighbourhood...
The pattern of life most often preferred by the cats appears to be to stay mostly indoors during the daytime, but to go out hunting at night... Whilst unscheduled visitors in our rear garden have included both badgers and foxes, the neighbourhood cats have evidently experienced no great difficulty in avoiding injury from any local wildlife...
An American web-site has suggested that the life-span of an "inside/outside" cat would AVERAGE about five years, but I certainly know of many that are at least twice that age, and are still very obviously fit, active, and athletic (primarily from the activities involved in their nocturnal rambles?)...
I do NOT believe that it is any more "natural" or justified for cats to spend the entirety of their lives in sealed and controlled conditions than it would be to impose similar conditions on children...
Just my 2c....
Bill.
