I should have specified that we live in a fairly conjested neighborhood (Brookline, MA) near some very busy streets. We do see two outdoor cats in our neighborhood, and they've been around for as long as we've been living there, but I've been told that outdoor cats have a short life span where we live.

But I agree that having an indoor/outdoor cat is best in the right neighborhood. I grew up in a quiet suburban neighborhood and all of our cats were indoor/outdoor and it was a lot easier.

Where we are though, I think it would only be fair to get a cat that is happy living indoors.
