I lost my cat a couple months back and am getting ready to go to the shelter and adopt a kitten. I prefer getting a kitten since I have a specific way I raise them. I will get a domestic short hair. A long haired cat requires more grooming and sheds like crazy. You could get a adult cat accustomed to going outside and put in a cat door. This would alleviate the need for a cat box. This will only be possible if you have a yard and low traffic neighborhood. But in the end, this should be a decision you both agree to.
