In the SE of the US, for many years they took them offshore and dumped the weapons, after the serial numbers had been checked. Of course, after a while it dawned on them that it was probably not the environmentally best way to dispose of the weapons.
I refuse to get into a debate about whether the destruction of firearms is a good thing or not :)
