I played a lot of volleyball as a kid and once I was out of college, I actually learned how to play. Spent the next 20-25 years playing at one level or another on the average of twice a week. Now I have two ugly knees to show for it. Now that I think about it, there were quite a few pick-up basketball games with my friends too. I'm sure that didn't help a whole lot either. Somewhere during that time I did a fair amount of weekend backpacking and a lot of motorcycle riding. A few day trips or overnighters on the Honda, and for a few years, a week or two cross country. Nice escapes from the everyday rat race. Then I got into kayaking, and the motorcycle went by the wayside. Dragging the boat up and down to and from the river, freezing my butt off in the winter, and having my legs go numb after a couple of hours in the boat, I have to keep reminding myself, as I crawl out onto shore on my hands and knees before I can stand up, "I am doing this for fun. I am doing this for fun." But, damned if I ain't throwing the boat on the car again the following week...all the while muttering to myself in the rain and sleet, "I must be nuts to be doing this!" Now I'm doing Tai Chi because it hurts too much to do most anything else.Of course there is always listening to music and playing air guitar, or air conducting(?)the orchestra, as well as surfing the Internet or reading a book as an escape. If all else fails, I take a nap.
